Tony Romo and John Elway were together in D.C. at the victory party of House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy. More on that later. But Broncos fans are getting excited. Is there reason for optimism in Denver? Romo seems like a natural fit in Denver, and with a championship level defense, a healthy Romo could be the difference. Dallas Cowboys beat writer, Brandon George shared the photo on Twitter.
But, Broncos fans should wait before they rush out and order those official Romo jerseys. For one thing, Cowboys GM Jerry Jones has to agree to a deal. We know how much Jerry loves Tony, and getting the best deal possible.
No to mention, Romo is 36 often injured and there are serious salary considerations. The NFL has a hard salary cap and GM’s need to be very smart about how deals are structured if they are trying to win championships. Romo’s base salary is $14M in 2017 but his cap number is more than $24M in ’17 and ’18. He has three years and $54 million remaining on his contract. Bottom line is for this “deal” to work a restructure is necessary. How willing is Romo? Only time will tell.
As an aside, is anyone else noticing the proliferation of certain athletes attending events and having affiliations with the GOP party since the election of Donald Trump? I’m just going to leave that there…
