ESPN is reporting that Saints running back Mark Ingram and his teammates were denied entry into London club, Cirque le Soir, for being too urban. Ingram detailed the encounter on his Twitter feed, saying he, Sterling Moore, Vonn Bell and B.W. Webb were denied entry despite having reservations.
According to the club’s website:
Cirque le Soir opened in London in 2009 and it has evolved into one of the most successful clubs in the world, attracting a galaxy of stars including Lady Gaga, Leonardo DiCaprio, Rihanna, Kanye West, Madonna, Jessie J, Princess Eugenie, Will.i.am, Katy Perry, Jude Law, Gerard Butler, Usher, Russell Crowe and Nicole Scherzinger.
Those are some A-list celebrities and a few of them might be considered “urban” but maybe not too “urban.” Guess they didn’t know these guys were American football players…
Since the Brexit vote, attitudes have been less than tolerant towards “others” in Britain. Apparently it’s spilling over into club access as well. The term “urban” is code used both domestically and abroad to refer to a specific type of people that are perceived to behave a certain type of way.
This is yet another example of the way in which certain people are treated, not only in America but around the world. When people of color say racism and prejudices exist, do you honestly think we’re making it up. Ingram, like people of color often do, took it in stride and kept it moving.
