The Los Angeles Times is reporting that Jeanie Buss has temporarily stopped an attempt by her brothers to gain control of the Los Angeles Lakers. According to the report Jim and Johnny Buss have been working behind the scenes to oust little sister as the Lakers president and controlling owner. Raise your hand if you saw this coming…(*slowly raises hand while sheepishly grinning).
Jim and Johnny attempted to hold a meeting next week to elect a new board of directors for the team that didn’t include little sis. In order to be the controlling owner, she has to be a director. The team is owned by all siblings via the family trust.
Jim was never going to be cool with being pushed out by Jeanine and Magic and now he’s fighting back. Jim is all in his feelings and lashing out. Jim has not shown the ability to run the Lakers to the level and standard that the franchise is accustomed to. Jeanie appears ready, willing and able to do what is necessary to get the franchise back on top. She is well respected in the league and within the business community and by all accounts has worked in various roles within the organization to prepare herself for this moment.
This battle for the franchise and their late father, Dr. Jerry Buss’, legacy will get ugly and won’t end anytime soon. Attorneys for Jeanie said the following:
This is no doubt the beginning and not the end of the game-playing. They don’t have a legal leg to stand on. This is a legal strategy doomed for failure.
Jeanie’s attorneys sought a temporary restraining order in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Friday to prevent the brothers from holding said meeting. This matter will be heard by a probate court in May, stay tuned.
