Amare Stoudemire is feeling freer in Israel than he did in the NBA. His comments on what he would do if he had a gay teammate are troubling, even if he was joking. He would’ve gotten fried had he still been in the league.
John Amaechi who is the first NBA player to come out, didn’t take Stoudemire comments in a joking manner.
Amaechi spoke to TMZ and here’s what he had to say.
These are serious times and we need serious people to lead important conversations, not petulant man-children spouting puerile prejudice. There is already one too many of those holding court in the media, and the world is poorer for it. Within the world of sport there are plenty of true role models — on and off the floor — whose words are carefully chosen to uplift and integrate society not join Trump and his grinning cabal in their ‘locker room banter. In these tumultuous times, these true role models are the men and women whose voices we need to disseminate to every corner, not a braying jackass making a desperate grab for relevance amongst a constituency destined for extinction.
Can’t be so tongue in cheek with saying these type of things because gaslighting is real. More than enough people act on what they hate especially when they know someone has the same sort of idea.
Stoudemire has a checkered past with this when he tweeted a gay slur and was fined by the NBA.
