BSO was live ringside Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the Adrien Broner v Mikey Garcia card. There were three fights in particular that stood out to us, and if you’re a fan of boxing the future of the sport looks bright.
Jermall Charlo, former middleweight champion moved up to 160 and fought Jorge Sebastian Heiland. If you call it a fight. Charlo had no trouble moving up in weight and throughly thrashed Heiland. The ref stopped the fight with :47 left in the 4th after Heiland hit the canvas. Charlo, whose identical twin Jermell is also a champion boxer, was comfortable throughout and is poised to continue to make noise. What makes Jermall special is his fearlessness and willingness to take on all comers.
We often harken back to the days of the “golden age” of boxing. The class division had names like Leonard, Hearns, Hagler and Duran. What made them special was their willingness to fight everyone and take on all comers. Charlo is a throwback in that regard. With last night’s win he becomes the mandatory challenger for Gennady “GGG” Golovkin.
