The Big 3 made its second stop this Sunday in Charlotte, NC. Ice Cube’s professional 3-on-3 half court basketball league packed out the Spectrum Center with 4 action packed games featuring former NBA players and coached by former NBA greats including Allen Iverson, Gary Payton, Clyde Drexler, George Gervin, Julius Erving, and Charles Oakley.
Following Game 2 where Drexler’s Power team edged out Oakley’s Killer 3’s, Payton and Power player Cuttino Mobley briefly discussed the “Super Team” concept and today’s NBA culture.
According to Payton, during his team, players didn’t team hop; teams drafted and made it work but that concept no longer works in today’s NBA.
We had eight/nine teams that had 4-5 great basketball players on it. There’s a difference, so they gotta go and do this. That’s just where the era is going.
Mobley chimed in to add that in the eras of past, they “loved basketball” and a lot of today’s players “love what basketball gives them”. Mobley goes on to refer to Chris Paul, Carmelo Anthony, and LeBron James as students of the game.
