Venus Williams opened Wimbledon with a 7-6 (7), 6-4 win over Elise Mertens but her emotions soon overwhelmed her during the post match press conference.
Meeting with the press, Williams was asked about the fatal crash last month that claimed the life of 78-year-old Jerome Barson, Williams’ eyes filled with tears.
After struggling to regroup, Williams left the media room and returned a short time later.
Venus was found to be at fault in the June 9 accident in Palm Beach Garden and is facing a wrongful death lawsuit from Barson’s family.
On Friday, Williams posted the following message to Facebook:
“I am devastated and heartbroken by this accident,” Williams wrote. “My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Jerome Barson and I continue to keep them in my thoughts and prayers.”
