Gregg Popovich loves ripping Donald Trump, and who can blame him. The current White House occupant is a mountain of lies, racist, divisive rhetoric, and overall behavior unfit to lead the country. In a recent interview with Dave Zirin of The Nation, Pop calls Trump, a “pathological liar” and “soulless coward.”
Pop’s latest rant which can go toe-to-toe with any diss track stems from comments Trump made about previous U.S. Presidents and their response to fallen soldiers. For those unaware, 4 U.S. soldiers were killed during an ambush in Niger on October 4th. Trump has failed to address this situation until now and as typical with his tactics, he lied about former Presidents to defend why he hadn’t discussed the incident publicly or called the families of the soldiers.
Trump said:
President Obama and other presidents, most of them didn’t make calls, a lot of them didn’t make calls. I like to call when it’s appropriate, when I think I’m able to do it.
Of course we know that’s a lie. Specifically referencing President Obama is a dog whistle sound to his base, reminding them of their racial prejudices. Trump seems to think it’s appropriate to play golf at least a few times since the incident in Niger, as opposed to calling the families of the fallen heroes he claims we should all respect.
Pop responded to Trumps comments stating:
I’ve been amazed and disappointed by so much of what this President had said, and his approach to running this country, which seems to be one of just a never ending divisiveness. But his comments today about those who have lost loved ones in times of war and his lies that previous presidents Obama and Bush never contacted their families, is so beyond the pale, I almost don’t have the words.
This man in the Oval Office is a soulless coward who thinks that he can only become large by belittling others. This has of course been a common practice of his, but to do it in this manner–and to lie about how previous Presidents responded to the deaths of soldiers–is as low as it gets. We have a pathological liar in the White House: unfit intellectually, emotionally, and psychologically to hold this office and the whole world knows it, especially those around him every day. The people who work with this President should be ashamed because they know it better than anyone just how unfit he is, and yet they choose to do nothing about it. This is their shame most of all.
Kudos to Pop and all others with platforms that speak out against Trump. Love for our country does not mean we shouldn’t demand more and criticize its leaders. Particularly when they exhibit behavior and action that is abhorrent and reprehensible.
