Yesterday, Donald Trump took to Twitter to sound off with some controversial comments on LaVar Ball shrugging off his efforts to bring LiAngelo Ball and two other UCLA players back to the States from China. When asked about Trump bringing the players back home, LaVar said “Who?”
At a White House press briefing this morning, Sarah Sanders said that Trump wasn’t actually going to leave the players in jail in China.
“It was a rhetorical response to a criticism by the father,” said Sanders. “Frankly it seems like the father didn’t want the President to intervene which I think would’ve been a sad thing if he hadn’t.” (Via TMZ)
Sanders went on to say that Trump was happy to get Ball and his teammates out of China. The original incident stemmed from Ball and his two teammates stealing items from a Louis Vuitton store in China.
Trump called the players “ungrateful” but failed to realize that last week, Ball and his teammates did acknowledge his efforts to obtain their release from China.
Now that the three basketball players are out of China and saved from years in jail, LaVar Ball, the father of LiAngelo, is unaccepting of what I did for his son and that shoplifting is no big deal. I should have left them in jail!
