Never Thought Marmalade and Jail Could Go Together Until I Saw Paddington 2 (Review)

An unpredictable and magical family adventure written by Simon Farby, Paddington 2 was brought onto our screens superbly thanks to director Paul King, who also gave a hand in writing the story. Paddington 2 is a movie I truly enjoyed.

After watching Paddington 2, I couldn’t help but feel happy. Ben Whishaw, the voice of Paddington, does a brilliant job with a character that will instantly win you over, whether you are a child or an adult.

Paddington introduces us to the characters that make up his neighborhood of Windsor Gardens in London – including the family he had settled in with, the Browns. It was brilliantly done as it allowed viewers to get to know some of the characters who would end up playing important roles in the story. Hugh Bonneville and Sarah Hawkins, who play the role of Henry Brown and his wife Mary Brown, worked wonders in their roles.

The story is centered around a pop-up book of the city of London that Paddington wants to buy from Mr. Gruber’s (Jim Broadbent) antique store. Paddington intends to gift it to his Aunt Lucy for her 100th birthday, but the book’s price is fairly high for Paddington. The viewers then witness the work experiences Paddington goes through in order to save up for the book. I learned that Paddington was the one who kept his community happy on a daily basis, even while busily working.

Paddington’s arch nemesis is Phoenix Buchanan, played superbly by Hugh Grant, who has an interest in the very same book. In this role, Grant does a marvelous job of playing a variety of characters in an attempt to hide from Paddington, the Browns and the police in his pursuit of the book.

An odd yet interesting and funny friendship that will have viewers laughing is between Paddington and the prison cook Nuckles McGinty, played by Brendan Gleeson. This unlikely bond forms thanks to the beloved bear’s ability to make marmalade for his fellow inmates.

Overall, I thought it was a good movie and feel that it will be one of the best family movies of 2018. It takes viewers on a magical adventure while also reminding the viewers of seemingly forgotten characteristics, including good manners, kindness, and honesty.
