Two Florida Publix employees are recovering from stab wounds suffered during a thwarted shoplifting attempt.
The Miami Herald reports that Matthew Miller attempted to leave the Miami Beach-area store without paying for a $7.99 chicken salad he hid in his backpack. When two store employees intervened to stop him, a ruckus ensued with both employees suffering stab wounds before police were able to take him into custody.
“Search incident to arrest revealed that [Miller] had concealed a chicken caesar salad in the bag that he was carrying,” the arresting officer wrote in Miller’s arrest affidavit.
The two emplyees eventually stopped Miller from getting away and then the officer ordered him to the ground. At that point, according to the police report, the officer noticed Felizor and Remy bleeding and saw Miller’s three to four inch steel knife on the ground.
One victim was transported to a hospital after being stabbed in the chest while the other was treated on site for a wound to the knee.
Miller has been charged with armed robbery, aggravated battery, and retail theft.
