The one and done rule in college basketball has been debated ever since it was implemented in 2006. 2005 was the last year that high school players could enter the NBA Draft without having to play one year of college basketball.
Detroit Pistons Head Coach Stan Van Gundy offered his thoughts on the rule and is in favor of it. He believes that the NCAA is wrongly using black athletes to be exploited. He went on to say that white baseball players can be recruited early in high school and leave without playing in college to end up receiving low amounts of money in the minor leagues but black college basketball players are forced to play a year in college even though they’re well qualified to head straight to the NBA.
Van Gundy has many valid points here. How can young black athletes have all of the skill set needed to head straight to the NBA be not allowed to go right away but white high school baseball players can start their pro careers at 17 and 18? The NCAA knows that these black men make them their millions every year for the NCAA Tournament and they will do everything in their power to make sure that these one and dones give them a show.
