Falcons QB Matt Ryan is heading into his last year of his contract so a large extension will be coming soon. Atlanta will look to solifiy the rest of Ryan’s career to stay in Atlanta within the range of $180 million, per D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
This would be Ryan’s second big contract as he also received $103.75 million at at the end of his rookie contract. Since then, he has carried the Falcons to three playoff wins, an MVP award in 2016, and an appearance in the Super Bowl two seasons ago.
This news comes a day after division rival QB Drew Brees inked a 2-year $50 million deal with the Saints. There was speculation that he would possibly go to the Vikings. Kirk Cousins also signed a 3-year fully guaranteed contract for $84 million with Minnesota so that showed that Ryan will also we well compensated, especially after his recent success in Atlanta.
Today is the official day for free agents to sign players so look for Atlanta to get this deal done sooner or later. While this is the case, the Falcons could still take their time and handle Ryan’s extension by mini camp.
