At around 9 am this morning in suburban Indianapolis, a student at Noblesville West Middle School asked to be excused to the restroom and returned with two handguns. The student, who has yet to be identified, allegedly opened fire on his classroom, injuring another student and his science teacher, Jason Seaman. Seaman, former defensive end for Southern Illinois University, swatted the gun away and tackled the armed student. Seaman was shot 3 times in the process, in his hip, abdomen, and forearm.
Seaman’s younger brother, Jeremy Seaman, a student at Noblesville West Middle School, says he’s “not surprised” his brother took such a heroic risk:
He’s not really ever been the person to run away. When the safety of the kids is at hand, it’s not surprising to me that he was going to do what he had to do.
Students who were not immediately picked up by parents were evacuated to Noblesville High School, only to be met by another gun-related lockdown from an unrelated text threat made by a high school student. Students were then only released to parents with proper identification.
Jason Seaman is currently head coach of the Noblesville West Middle School football team and has taught science there for four years. According to Seaman’s mother, he is out of surgery and will recover. The student shooter is in custody with local police.
