Former Dallas Mavericks Coach & Hall of Famer, Don Nelson, is living his best life during his retirement.
Nowadays, if you’re looking for Coach Nelson, he’s probably chilling in his man cave, playing Hold Em’ with a couple of his buddies that you might recognize: Willie Nelson, Woody Harrelson, or Owen Wilson.
Believe it or not, Nelson,77, also got himself a medical marijuana card down in Maui.
Nelson told the New York Times that he is fairly new to smoking:
I didn’t smoke until maybe three or four years ago. I never smoked when I was coaching. I just started. Willie got me smoking.
It’s not that I smoke all the time. I usually just smoke at night during poker games. Like Willie told me, it’s hard to be depressed when you’re smoking pot.
Now, Nelson says he’s just a user, not a dealer:
I just grow for myself. You’re allowed to grow up to 10 plants, so you have plenty to smoke. I’ve never sold. I would never do that.
Don also had to flex a little bit for the skeptics questioning his gardening abilities:
Oh, it’s great. Great stuff. It’s called Nellie Kush. It’s O.G. and Hindu Kush. Hindu Kush is really good. It comes from India and the guy that brought it over mixed the two of them, so we’ve got Nellie Kush now.
NYT also asked Nellie if he thought that he could have won a title with that Chris Mullin, Latrell Sprewell, and Chris Webber Warriors team from the early 90s:
No…I didn’t think Webber — at that time in his life, anyway — was ready to play winning basketball, or do anything winning at that point. He was a pretty confused young guy. He was about the toughest guy I ever coached. It took him a long time.
Latrell Sprewell famously attacked Coach Nelson following a heated argument in practice back in 97, so it’s not very surprising that Nellie would feel some type of way about that roster.
