James Borrego Thanks Gregg Popovich In Hornets Introductory Press Conference; Recalls How Pop Kept Forgetting His Name

James Borrego has been introduced as the new head coach of the Charlotte Hornets. He is also the first Hispanic-American head coach in the NBA.

Borrego spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the Spurs prior to his arrival in Charlotte and thanked Gregg Popovich in his introductory press conference. He also mentioned how Pop kept forgetting his name and instead, started calling him Ray Romano from the TV show Everybody Loves Raymond.

“I want to recognize Gregg Popovich – a mentor, a friend, someone that believed in me. Someone in my first year that didn’t even know my name, said Boreego. “Called me Ray Romano. Everyone loves Raymond right? But thank you to Pop. He’s been an instrumental part of this. (Via News4 in San Antonio)

Gregg Popovich continues to enlarge his coaching tree in the NBA. Among the names who have earned head coaching opportunities who have been under his wing are Doc Rivers, Steve Kerr, Quinn Snyder, Brett Brown, and Mike Budenholzer.
