John McEnroe is one of the best to do it in the history of tennis and fans of the sports definitely wonder what other major names he could’ve beaten. Surprisingly, Donald Trump made him an offer in 1998 that did have him intrigued.
In an interview on ‘In Depth With Graham Bensinger,’ McEnroe revealved that Trump sent him a letter that year offering him $1 million to face either Venus or Serena Williams. The letter started off with “‘Dear John, I want to offer you $1 million to play either Serena or Venus.” This happened all while McEnroe was calling a tennis match.
McEnroe turned the offer down and simply said that he didn’t have any desire to face a woman and have a Battle of the Sexes match. He did feel that he could beat either one of them but his children thought otherwise.
“Over the course of time, literally my kids, my daughters will say: ‘Dad I don’t know if you can beat Serena.’ I’m like, ‘God I can’t even get my kids on my side.’”
Both the Williams sisters and McEnroe both have great legacies within the sport of tennis. Seeing McEnroe face against either one of them would’ve been one for the ages.
