Kanye West spewed some truly ridiculous/heartbreaking comments about “slavery being a choice” on TMZ Live, and it’s spurred a variety of reactions from black people across the globe in disbelief that a seemingly well-educated black man with this much influence could say something so utterly stupid:
During a conversation on “TMZ Live” with Harvey Levin and Charles Latibeaudiere, West said, “When you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years?! That sounds like a choice. You was there for 400 years and it’s all of y’all. It’s like we’re mentally in prison. I like the word ‘prison’ because ‘slavery’ goes too direct to the idea of blacks. Slavery is to blacks as the Holocaust is to Jews. Prison is something that unites as one race, blacks and whites, that we’re the human race.”
Again, ridiculous.
If you are a fan of Kanye West, these comments undoubtedly sting worse, because you know MAGA will be grabbing this headline & stuffing it in their bag of retorts. Despite his run of absolute genius in music, Kanye appears to have no idea about one of the most important & traumatizing events in black history.
So, as a Kanye West fan, rather than sit angry that one of my favorite artists appears to be a dunce, I choose to chalk this one up to ignorance & focus on the HILARIOUS hashtag created by black Twitter #IfSlaveryWasAChoice.
For your viewing pleasure, I’ve selected some of my favorites, but I highly suggest you go even further into the hashtag. There’s plenty of tweets to keep you howling.
