Future has been relatively quiet for the most part of then 2018 but then released his Super Fly movie soundtrack and is back in full force with his Beast Mode 2 mixtape. This project is also entirely produced by Zaytoven just like the first series which dropped in January of 2015.
Anticipation grew for Beast Mode 2 throughout the past two years. Future said he recorded 100 songs to choose from for this project but a release date was never clear. He finally took to Twitter last night to say that Beast Mode 2 would drop at midnight. It was also a coincidence that Future dropped this mixtape on Ciara and Russell Wilson’s wedding anniversary.
WiFi Lit is the first song to open Beast Mode 2. This record makes me reminisce of his first major mixtape, Dirty Sprite from 2011. The hook starts out with “Gone in the sky, over 20,000, I keep my wifi lit. I spend over 5,000, that’s just on one fit. I’m not going back no more when I ain’t have shit. Pray I get a new connect, pray I get a brick.” The Zaytoven instrumentals are solid in complimenting the old Future sound on this record.
Cuddle My Wrist is definitely a whip the dope in the kitchen record you can vibe to with punchlines such as “Goyard as soon as the bag got packed. Zone 6, sure, I ain’t showing no slack. Never been a quitter, I’ma turn it to the max. Lean in my liver, I’ve been taking good batch. Real dope dudes don’t hang around rats.”
Racks Blue showed flashes of the greatness that Future and Zaytoven created on the first Beast Mode tape. Future also wasn’t scared to throw some shade and address the situation of dating Scottie Pippen’s wife Larsa. She cheated on Scottie and this resulted in Future throwing the “I should’ve never got caught up with a cougar” line on this record.
31 Days could have had a better delivery. With the instrumental at the beginning of the record, I thought it would bring the same energy that ‘Rent Money’ had on Future’s self-titled album ‘FUTURE’ in 2017.
Red Light was a fan-favorite on Beast Mode 2 based off of reactions on social media. Future came through with the motivation on this record with lyrics such as “Sleepin’ on the floor had made my heart colder. They try to make it hard for me, I never falter
Gotta say I’m good, I’m on the ESPY’s. I made millions by the day, check my chest piece. Try to take care of my family the best I know how.”
Doh Doh had me excited to hear this record prior to Beast Mode 2’s release due to the simple fact that Young Scooter is featured. Scooter is an Atlanta rapper that has been friends with Future for years and has been making a name for himself since 2012 with records such as ‘Julio’ and ‘Colombia’ which earned remix appearances from Rick Ross and Birdman. The East Atlanta combo on this record didn’t disappoint as this is the real trap record that fans were looking for on Beast Mode 2. As expected, Scooter stole the show with his appearance with the bars “I got chu, I got blue, fifty racks, we used to swing the dough. Six trap houses in a row, I’m shooting dice, bank ten or four. Future get a mil’ a show, that’s why my f***** prices low. 220 on the dash, you know how fast the Aston go. Road running, twenty years, you know I got the package though. 1, 2 or 3, I got that dope boy magic bowl.”
When I Think About It is a top three record on Beast Mode 2 and one of the best beats from Zaytoven on this project. The chill vibe is there and makes you wanna bob your head to Future calling out his foes who want to plot on him but he’s still out here winning regardless of the outcome.
I wasn’t a big fan of the verses on Some More but the hook is what will bring the attention of Future fans with similar lines from the first Beast Mode with the lines “Codeine, it sit on my kidney and dissolve. Hit a few licks with my dawgs, we mobbin’. Called a few chicks on my line, they slobbin. Girl on a girl, if they eat that’s a topping. Thought she was true, she was f*****’ the opps.”
I expected many records on Beast Mode 2 to make me reminisce about Future records from the last two projects such as FUTURE and Hndrxx but Hate The Real Me took me back to the Future ‘True Story’ and ‘Dirty Sprite’ mixtapes for sure. The beat from Zaytoven reminded me of the futuristic sound that was taking over Atlanta from 2009-2011 and Future adapted well on this one.
Beast Mode 2 didn’t exceed my expectations but delivered with the original Beast Mode vibes. What I’m looking forward to from Future now is a possible third Dirty Sprite project with the expectation of him sounding as hungry as he did back in 2011 and going back to the basics.
