Last week Netflix canceled Iron Fist after a much improved second season, now Luke Cage has suffered the same fate. Luke Cage Season 2 was a much-improved entry into the Marvel television universe, that left viewers much more satisfied coming off an underwhelming end to Season 1. Talks of a third season were in the works, but Netflix abruptly ended negotiations and decided to walk away from the series.
A source at Variety shared these details:
“Unfortunately, ‘Marvel’s Luke Cage’ will not return for a third season. Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series,” Netflix and Marvel Television said in a joint statement.
A source tells Variety that talks for a third season had taken place, but that Netflix ultimately decided that one would not be feasible.
Although the cancellation of Luke Cage is a surprise, this is likely not the end for the Harlem hero’s presence on the small screen. Disney is ramping up production for its soon to be launched streaming service, so I would not be shocked to see Luke Cage and The Immortal Iron Fist smashing villains for the mouse network.
