If the Cowboys want Earl Thomas, then they’ll have to back the Brinks truck up to do it.
According to Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, free agent safety Earl Thomas wants to be the highest paid safety in the NFL.
Additionally, Earl Thomas doesn’t plan to give the Dallas Cowboys a ‘hometown discount’.
Thomas famously chased down Cowboys coach Jason Garrett in December of 2017 telling Garrett to,
“Come get me.”
From that point forward the rumors and flirtations of Thomas coming to the Cowboys have been well-documented.
The Cowboys attempted to trade for the Seahawks safety, offering a third-round, then a second-round pick on two separate occasions before ultimately being rebuffed by the Seahawks.
The All-Pro safety though, according to Hill, is back to full strength and ready to go after suffering a season-ending leg injury this past season.
Thomas is apparently willing to sign with any NFL team and is looking to exceed the Kansas City Chiefs’, Eric Berry ($13 million/year) as the game’s highest paid safety.
Per Hill, the Cowboys met with Thomas’ agent, David Mulugheta, on Thursday to gauge Thomas’ interest and what he’s looking for financially.
The former Defensive Player of the Year has made it clear, if the Cowboys want him they’re going to have pay top dollar for his services.
Ties with current Cowboys secondary/passing game coordinator Kris Richard and his playing at the University of Texas not withstanding, Thomas would be a great fit for the Cowboys.
The question will be whether or not the Cowboys are willing to do what it takes to bring the Orange, TX native home.
It appears it’s going to take all of Jerry’s money to get Thomas in a Cowboys uniform.
