Things are starting to heat up between Errol Spence Jr. and Mikey Garcia, who face each other this Saturday night at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, TX.
Errol Spence Jr. is clearly fed up with the talk from Mikey Garcia and the Garcia family and he voiced his frustrations this evening during the PBC Press Conference. Spence claims that Garcia talks trash when he is with his dad and brother, but then gets in front of him and gets humble. “Keep that same energy that you had when you were in Cali in your gym, that you have here”.
It is no surprise that the fighters are beginning to build a little competitive animosity. This is the first time in a while that boxing fans will get the opportunity to see two undefeated fighters, both champions, both in their prime, both considered top pound-for-pound boxers, face off.
Both fighters have resumes that cannot be ignored. Errol Spence Jr., the current IBF welterweight champion is 24-0, with 21 knockouts. Mikey Garcia comes from a long bloodline of fighters including his father, Eduardo Garcia, who was the trainer of world champion boxer Fernando Vargas and his brother, Robert Garcia, former IBF super featherweight champion and current trainer of Mikey Garcia. Mikey comes into this fight 39-0 with 30 of his wins by knockout. Garcia is a four-division champ, who has held titles in the featherweight, junior lightweight and lightweight divisions.
Mikey Garcia shocked the boxing world when he called out Errol Spence Jr. after a convincing win against Robert Easter to unify the lightweight titles. With welterweights like Thurman, Porter and Crawford seemingly dodging Errol Spence, Mikey Garcia moves up two weight classes to challenge the most feared man at 147.
Robert Garcia has been open and honest about his hesitation to take the fight, thinking that Spence was simply too big for Mikey. Apparently, Spence has heard these concerns, because he closed today’s press conference by saying “I’m gonna punish him. He’s gonna wish he took his brother’s advice not to take this fight.”
