Almost two weeks ago, 15-year-old Nigel Shelby took his own life after experiencing hate at school just for being gay. It’s sad that we’re still at this point in America.
Shelby’s funeral took place in Huntsville, Alabama this past weekend and it was helped financed by some major names. Per TMZ, Dwyane Wade, Gabrielle Union, Ludacris, and Janelle Monae helped cover the costs of the funeral after being made aware of his death by Atlanta restaurant “Slutty Vegan” owner Pinky Cole and Master of None star Lena Waithe.
Cole took to Instagram to honor Shelby and to let people know to check on their friends and loved ones because you never know what they’re going through.
“Today I got the opportunity to celebrate the life of Nigel Shelby,” said Cole. “I pray that no other child will ever have to endure what this young baby dealt with. We gotta love on our own! Check on your friends and loved ones. You never know what someone is going through.” #ripnigel ๐
Salute to everyone here who helped bring awareness to Shelby’s death and helping cover the costs of the funeral. The world has to do better. People shouldn’t keep on having to take their own lives because of criticism of their sexual orientation. Flip the page to check out Cole’s IG post regarding the funeral.
