Today, federal prosecutors played a phone call to a jury between former Arizona assistant head coach Emanuel “Book” Richardson told aspiring agent Christian Dawkins that Head Coach Sean Miller was paying then Arizona star DeAndre Ayton $10,000 per month. Ayton was regarded as the top player in the nation and went on to be drafted first overall last summer by the Phoenix Suns.
This call was traced down by wiretaps on June 20, 2017. Dawkins and Richardson were trying to get Ayton to join Dawkins’ sports management agency. Dawkins told Richardson that Ayton was getting way more than $5k and that’s not even in the same ballpark of what he’s actually getting.
In February 2018, ESPN reported on an intercepted wiretap call between Dawkins and Miller which detailed Ayton securing $100k before getting to Arizona.
“We’ll see how Sean plays it out,” Dawkins said.
“You know what he bought per month?” Richardson asked.
“What he do?” Dawkins asked.
“I told you — 10,” Richardson replied.
“He’s putting up some real money for them [expletive],” Dawkins responded. “He told me he’s getting killed.” (Via ESPN)
It’ll be interesting to see if Arizona gets hit with any sanctions soon. Despite Ayton coming to Arizona, they still lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament in 2018 to Buffalo.
