Mikey Garcia shocked the world when he came out and said that he was going to move up two weight classes to fight arguably the best welterweight in the division, Errol Spence Jr. Spence, who is being dodged by most of the top welterweights, is widely regarded as the boogeyman of the division. Still, Garcia made good on his word and fought Spence in his back yard, Arlington, Texas.
Despite being a great all-around fighter, Garcia was outmatched, not just in size but in skill, and Spence fought a shutout, winning a unanimous decision with scores of 120-107, 120-108 and 120-108.
Still, Garcia is considered one of the best pound-for-pound boxers, who just lost to a bigger man who is also on the pound-for-pound list. The logical next step was for Garcia to move back down to 135 and continue to dominate opponents his own size.
But Garcia has made it clear that is not what he wants. Garcia has won world titles in four weight divisions (featherweight, junior lightweight, lightweight and junior welterweight) and wants one at welterweight as well. Garcia vacated his WBC lightweight belt and has expressed a desire for his next fight to be at 140 or 147.
