The United States has a new Sports Betting Capital for the month of May.
New Jersey took in more bets ($318.9 million) than Nevada ($317.4 million) for the month of May. New Jersey also reported more revenue ($15.5 million) than Nevada ($11.6 million) for May.
Former New Jersey State Senator Raymond Lesniak had this to say:
“I predicted this a long time ago; the Northeast is a hotbed of sports betting. We are going to leave Nevada in the dust and never look back.”
Lesniak led his state’s decade-long effort to legalize sports betting by overturning a federal law prohibiting it in most places. New Jersey won the U.S. Supreme Court case in May 2018 that cleared the way for all 50 states to offer legal sports betting. New Jersey would then take its first sports bet in June 2018.
A couple things to note: 1) 80% of sports bets in New Jersey are taken online or via smartphones 2) The population of New Jersey is 8.9 million 3) The population of Nevada is 3.1 million.
