Netflix had to know it was never going to be able to keep some of its biggest shows once Disney, DC, etc… started their own streaming services.
NBC will be starting its own streaming service and it was willing to pay whatever it took to make sure it had one of the biggest shows. It reportedly will be paying 100 million per year to stream “The Office” per year.
A person familiar with the negotiations said Netflix made an offer to keep it, but the offer was rejected. Netflix was willing to pay up to $90 million a year for the rights, but NBC topped that offer and will pay $100 million. ( “The Office” was produced by Universal Television, a different division of NBCUniversal, in association with Deedle-Dee Productions and Reveille Productions.) One idea under consideration was to split the rights, with Netflix being the home for ad-free watching, and NBC’s service being the ad-supported option.
Losing “The Office “will definitely be a huge loss for Netflix. It was the most streamed show on Netflix last year. It streamed for an astonishing 52.1 Billion minutes.
Who knows how much those streams will be from now until the show stops streaming in February 2021.
The only thing that’s for certain is we will be seeing more networks starting their own streaming services.
