We are 13 months removed from Florida rapper XXXTentacion’s tragic murder, but the pain in many of the late artists fans remains fresh. Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy affectionately called ‘X’ by his fans been, has been compared by some to Tupac for his ability to bond with a generation and leave a lasting impact on music in very a short span of time. This ability to connect helped generate huge buzz, which only grew louder after his public death. X even in death has a huge emotional connection and mentioning his name distastefully, can tug at the heartstrings.
This proved to be true when Comedy Central uploaded a clip from “This Week At The Comedy Cellar” to their Twitter account featuring comedian Dina Hashem. In the clip Dina makes a joke and says “Is anyone still mourning XXXTentacion? He’s a rapper, who was murdered, he’s dead now. He was shot, he was on his way to buy a car with $50,000 in cash and somebody shot him and took the money. Which is very tragic, but I also think it would be a very good Venmo commercial. That’s the first thing I thought when I heard that. Like, ‘I don’t have Venmo, I should get Venmo.’”
Twitter immediately took notice to the video clip, and jumped all over Dina Hashem. Fans and celebrities alike took offense to Dina’s joke and were relentless in their responses. After seeing the backlash from her comments Dina addressed the issue on Instagram, stating, “I wasn’t trying to hurt anyone’s feelings, that’s never what I want. I’m a comic and use jokes to try and make dark topics less painful but I realize not everyone feels that way, and I don’t want anyone to feel badly. It was taken down and won’t air on TV.”
