This is a classic example of when trying to be funny goes terribly bad.
Chicago Cubs minor league affiliate, the Tennessee Smokies, attempted to make light of a situation that has sparked national conversation.
Earlier this week news was made after Nike pulled its “Betsy Ross” Air Maxes after company ambassador Colin Kaepernick suggested that the shoes would be offensive.
The ‘Betsy Ross’ flag is considered by some offensive due to the ties the flag has to the era of slavery.
The Smokies, ahead of their game on Wednesday, designed their field with the controversial flag ahead of the Fourth of July Thursday.
The Smokies social media department took it a step further by sending a tweet directed at Kaepernick and Nike for pulling the shoes with the flag’s design.
The tweet, after receiving several likes and retweets, was taken down by the team and a subsequent tweet apologizing was then posted.
Social media reacted strongly to the deleted tweet and was largely not amused by the subsequent apology.
