Before Kawhi Leonard chose to sign with the Clippers almost everyone had him going to the Lakers. It seemed like it was the perfect on the court fit. He would get to be on a team that’d be the favorites to win now and be matched with Anthony Davis once Lebron left or retired.
According to the Toronto Star, Kawhi wanted to avoid all of that and never wanted to join Lebron and AD to create a super team.
Yes, the Lakers made noise early in the week after striking out on Butler themselves. LeBron James reportedly offered to defer to Kawhi, with Anthony Davis as the third MVP-level player in the trio. But Kawhi was said to be concerned about the dysfunction in the organization, and two sources say Kawhi did not want to play on a super team with LeBron. The Lakers were also the only team who leaked anything during the process, which more than anything indicated they had no idea who they were really dealing with.
Ironically, if Kawhi never wanted to create a super team, the Lakers might have had a better chance of getting him if they didn’t make the trade for AD. He signed with the Clippers and even though they are the co-favorites to win the 2020 title with the Lakers, the NBA is more wide open now than ever.
