The best kept secret in the NBA off-season was Kawhi convening then Thunder forward Paul George to ask for a trade so they could team up on the Clippers. After the trade there were rumors that the Thunder were going to trade both PG and Russ anyways so the Clippers would have their pick and of either guy.
Now according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Kawhi didn’t want Russ.
“Sam, I began to hear in the days leading up to Kawhi’s commitment in the early morning hours of July 6 that he informed the Clippers that he would sign with them — if they were able to acquire a second star. Russell Westbrook and Paul George became early targets, I was told, but Leonard identified George as the player to get. And once the Clippers received word that Leonard was choosing them, they did whatever they could to ensure his commitment stuck.”
It makes sense that Kawhi wanted PG instead of Russ given how much of a volume scorer he is and how he doesn’t really play defense. PG on the other hand isn’t as much a volume scorer and is one of the best wing defenders in the league.
