This weekend presents a variety of options for fans of the sweet science. Here, we break down those option in hope of helping you determine what to watch.
Vergil Ortiz Jr. vs Antonio Orozco (DAZN)
This is the most entertaining fight for an obvious reason: Vergil Ortiz Jr. Ortiz is 13-0 with 13 knockouts. Any time he is in the ring you are guaranteed a knockout. And an early one at that, as he’s never been past round 5. But rather than spending his time searching for a knockout, Ortiz spends the early round systematically breaking down his opponents before putting them out of their misery.
This will be Ortiz’s second fight as a welterweight. Ortiz, not shy of a challenge, moved up to the most competitive weight class in the sport to prove a point.
Vergil Ortiz, Jr. (13-0; 13 KO) faces Antonio Orozco (28-1; 17 KO) and is hoping to prove that he is ready to face the best in the weight class.Ortiz Jr. vs. Orozco takes place this Saturday, August 10 and airs live on DAZN with a fight time of 7:00 p.m. eastern time.
Julio César Chavez Jr vs Evert Bravo (Azteca 7)
Super middleweights Julio César Chávez Jr (50-3-1, 32 KOs) and Evert Bravo (25-10-1, 19 KOs) will face each other this weekend in San Juan de Los Lagos, Jalisco. 33-year-old Chavez Jr. hasn’t been in the ring since his loss to Canelo Alvarez over 2 years ago. In contrast, Bravo is an active boxer who has fought 13 times in the last 5 years.
Despite all of his hardships and falling short to the legend that is his father, Chavez Jr only has three losses: the shutout versus Canelo Alvarez, a unanimous decision loss to former WBC Middleweight Champion Sergio Martinez in 2012 and a stoppage versus Andrzej Fonfara in 2015.
With that being said he is simply at this point living off his father’s name, but with a couple of good showing, because of his name, he could get a title shot.
Jason Sosa vs Haskell Lydell Rhodes (ESPN +)
When scheduled, the main event on this card was slated to be a featherweight fight between Emmanuel Dominguez and Carl Frampton. But after a freak accident rendered Carl Frampton unable to fight with a broken hand, the 10 round super featherweight bout between Sosa and Rhodes has been elevated to the main event.
Sosa (22-3-4, 15 KOs) is a previous WBA title holder at 130 pounds. Sosa beat Javier Fortuna in 2016 to win the belt and held it until April 2017 where he lost it to Vasiliy Lomachenko in a ninth-round TKO.
Rhodes (27-3-1, 13 KOs) has won four out of his last five fights and appears to be on an incline. The fight can be watched on ESPN+ with the undercard starting at 8:00 p.m. eastern time/5:00 p.m. pacific.
