Just a few days after ex Michigan State basketball Mateen Cleaves was found not guilty on four counts of sexual assault, a new video from the night of the incident has been released to the public.
The video was obtained by WXYZ Detroit through a public records request. The video is surveillance footage in Septemeber 2015 taken between 1:30 and 2 AM outside of the Knights Inn Motel in Grand Blanc, Michigan.
In the video Cleaves, wearing only socks can be seen chasing down the woman, who is wearing only a bra grabbing her and pulling her back inside.
Cleaves defense team reportedly tried to explain the video by stating Cleaves was trying to protect the woman by pulling her back into the room where they were having consensual sex.
From the Detroit News, Cleaves defense attorney double down on his clients claims that the sex was consensual and the woman was lying.
Regret is not rape,” said defense attorney Michael Manley, echoing his brother and co-counsel’s words from opening statements in the trial. Manley said not a “sliver of DNA” evidence backed up her claims of rape.”
The jury took only a little over three hours to deliberate before finding Cleaves not guilty on all four counts of sexual assault.
