Usually when people fly back from another country after visiting family, they don’t think they’ll be detained for having drugs.
That includes Maryland resident Leon Haughton who returned from Jamaica December 29th and spent 3 months in jail because authorities thought he had liquid meth in 3 jars full of money.
Authorities didn’t believe Haughton when he said it was honey and the jars tested positive for meth in a field test. However, the fact that it took 3 months for then to sort everything out is ridiculous.
As a result, the father of 6 says
”Once I came out, all my insurances collapsed, my credit was destroyed,” he told the affiliate. “I lost my job, everything. They just left me a mess.”
“My kids were stressed out, my mom, everybody,” he said. “They put me through hell.”
The prosecutors office doesn’t think they did anything wrong saying
“A specially trained drug sniffing dog was alerted to the presence of a controlled dangerous substance and a preliminary test done by the police officers further tested positive for a controlled dangerous substance,” the office said. “The confirmatory laboratory test showed (there) was no controlled dangerous substance inside the honey.”
Haughton doesn’t want his money back but he is suing, as he should.
