Carson King, a 24 year old Iowa State fan, held up a sign during College Gameday that said his Busch light supply needed replenished with his Venmo name ended raising over $1 million for the University of Iowa’s children’s hospital.
King was seen on tv and said that after he received $600 he decided to donate the money to the hospital. He received a year of free beer from Anheuser-Busch and a special can with his face one it. Anheuser-Busch also said they’d donate $350,000 to the hospital.
When you do something good like that people are going to want to do a story on you and put you in tv or in the paper. That’s exactly what happened.
The Des Moines Register decided to do a story on King and did a simple background check of his social media and found 2 racist tweets.
one compared black mothers to gorillas and the other joked about black people being killed during the Holocaust.
He’s deleted the tweets and apologized and Anheuser-Busch distanced themselves from him but said they’d still make the donation.
A lot of people on social media are mad at Anheuser-Busch for distancing themselves and at the Des Moines Register for digging up the old tweets.
That’s a problem with society. When someone white does something like this, it’s always they made a mistake and they were kids. When it’s a person of color they don’t get that same compassion.
Anheuser-Busch and the Des Moines Register did the correct thing. People need to know that no matter how old you are, being racist isn’t acceptable and they shouldn’t continue to be rewarded just because they apologize only after someone brought it up.
Another issue is the reporter for that dug up King’s tweets have some questionable insensitive tweets himself so it’s a bad look all around. He’s since apologized also.
