Apologies to all the loyal readers of this Power recap. Normally, I have these ready for you as soon as the episode ends, but it has been a very busy last week in the sports and entertainment worlds! Thank you for your patience and for supporting this recap. Now, let’s get into Sunday’s episode!
Ummm…WTF?! Ok, I must confess. When this show first premiered in 2014 I loved it. Finally, an attempt at a prestige television show with a predominantly Black cast. It was smart, edgy and extremely interesting in the first few seasons. But, as time went on and more plots and characters were added, the show became unwieldy, and a shell of its former self. Sunday night’s “Why Is Tommy Still Alive?” went from the ridiculous to the absurd and sums up all the problems the show has had and will have in its final season.
The episode began with Ghost having a dream of the day Angie walked into Truth and reentered his life, as well as some of their more intimate moments as a couple. I’m a self confessed Angela fan, so know issues from we on that front. We’ve said it many times, power is the connective tissue and theme of the show. But at its core, this is a love story. A tragic one. But a story about love, nonetheless.
Ghost awakens from his dream only to have hallucinations of his deceased lover, in that stunning red dress from back in season one. This was good. Actress Lela Loren and Omari Hardwick have excellent on-screen chemistry. It was evident when things were going well and when they were going poorly for their characters.
It was a different experience to see Angela as a detached figment of Ghost’s imagination. She wasn’t his lover, friend, confidant or even his enemy. She was judging him, and doing so very harshly. There is a reason why criticism and judgment from those closest to us hurt the most. Your man Ghost is going through it right now.
Ghost snaps out of his Freudian haze (though a Hegelian like mind would be ideal right about now) to receive a call from Jason who is growing impatient. Ghost owes Jason a big payment, and he’s currently experiencing cash flow problems. If that isn’t enough the dissolution of his marriage is upon him (no matter how long it’s been “over” it’s not real until those papers are signed and filed and that’s heavy). And to top it off Proctor stops by his office with Dre to tell him that the feds are moving ahead with their RICO case and the identity of the witness (Maria Suarez) is finally revealed to Ghost.
Cot damn! One of those things is enough to drive a person off the deep end. But Ghost is staring down the barrel of a 12 gauge semi auto. How in the world does James and Proctor have the balance and mental acuity given all the things happening around them to hatch a plan to entrap the feds?
Again, no normal person would be able to think straight, but these two are playing the long con? He convinces Dre to wear a wire while working with the feds? LOL. Nah man. We don’t believe you. You need more people. Actually, we don’t. Too many people is a big part of the show’s problem.
