Adam Silver On What He Did When China Asked Him TomFire Rockets GM Daryl Morey & Why He Is Prepared To Play A Game Of Chicken With Chinese Government Over The Future Of NBA In The Country (Video)

Adam Silver is not backing down from his stance on the China situation and doubled down on his support for Rockets GM, Daryl Morey who sent the tweet that caused the mess.

During the Time 100 Health Summit, Silver spoke about the consequences of backing Morey saying

“The NBA  is not only willing to cope with losses of millions in revenues, but we are. The losses have already been substantial. Our games are not back on the air in China as we speak, and we’ll see what happens next.”

“I don’t know where we go from here. The financial consequences have been and may continue to be fairly dramatic.”

Silver is not just saying that either. It’s estimated that China accounts for 10% of the NBA’s net revenue. There have also been reports that the salary cap could drop which causes players to make less money, and some players who have shoe deal with Chinese companies won’t get their contracts renewed.

The tweet Morey sent effects literally everyone that has anything to do with the NBA so it’s no surprise Silver says the Chinese government wanted the NBA to fire the Rockets GM.

“We made clear that we were being asked to fire him, by the Chinese government, by the parties we dealt with, government and business. We said there’s no chance that’s happening. There’s no chance we’ll even discipline him. These American values — we are an American business — travel with us wherever we go,” Silver said. “And one of those values is free expression. We wanted to make sure that everyone understood we were supporting free expression.”

Although Morey’s tweet could cost the league billions of dollars, I think it was the right move to stick by him. The optics alone would send a bad message because of the values we have in America. Morey didn’t say anything morally wrong so firing him just wouldn’t be the right thing to do and would send the message that money rules all.
