Sacramento Kings Buddy Hield spoke with the media recently, and quite frankly was very open about private contract negotiations. The Kings have reportedly offered Buddy Hield a 4 year $90 million dollar deal. Buddy’s asking price from the Kings is just a few million more than what they are willing to give. He wants around a ball park number of 110 million; which is roughly 27.5 million a year over the next 4 years.
Buddy who became very emotional speaking with the media stated,
“I love Sacramento, I came from nothing, I love to hoop, If they don’t want to do it , then ill have to go somewhere else”
Directly if the Kings do not offer Buddy what he wants you can expect Buddy to ask for a trade.
Hield knows his market value and he also knows what they gave fellow teammate Harrison Barnes.
The Kings ultimately overpaid the market value for Barnes. Consequently, it may hurt Buddy Hield’s contract negotiations. Buddy has a right to feel that he’s not getting what wants and should no way shape or form suffer from the organization giving a grand ransom for Barnes.
According to SBNation, The Kings will give Barnes, Fox, Ariza, Corey Joseph, and Dewayne Dedmon a combined 61 million this season.
What type of Leverage does the Kings organization have over Hield?
If Buddy does indeed hit the free agency market next summer, he would be indeed a “restricted free agent”.
What does this mean?
If Hield was offered a contract from another NBA franchise, The Kings have the rights to match any offer.
Basically, If Buddy chose to go this route he would still end up losing some money temporarily until he signed a long term deal. Temporarily meaning millions of dollars lost.
He would recommend reaching a deal with the Kings which would mean them having to up their offer from 4 years $90 million to 4 years $110 million (27.5 million year)
