What once seemed like a too good to be true idea, will soon be a reality for student athletes at the collegiate level. On Tuesday, top officials within the NCAA voted unanimously to allow college athletes to profit off their name and likeness, a move many feel should have been years ago.
This decision comes on the heels of California passing legislation to allow its student-athletes to profit from endorsements that caused a stir in the sporting world among traditionalists and progressive fans and players alike.
Full guidelines will now be discussed and implemented sooner rather than later as 2021 is believed to be the latest rules could be put in place for all college athletes to make money while playing college sports. The NCAA will form rules to ensure athletes to be compensated “in a manner consistent with the collegiate model.”
