Sunday night’s “Scorched Earth” is part one of the two-part extended midseason finale of Power. Damn, they sure know how to drag this out, huh? Despite the extended limp towards a series finale, this was a good episode in the current framework of what the series has become. Let’s get into it!
We finally have an end to the Jason Micic storyline. Loyal supporters of this recap know I’ve been calling to an end for this for quite some time. We’ve belabored the point about the ridiculous ways in which plots move forward and the believability of situations. We are where we are with this series. But, the killing of Jason and potentially having Dre framed for it was actually a good move. It gives us an easy through-line to Dre getting killed by the end of the series.
What was great about this was, it was “old school” Ghost. He managed to come out of the struggle with the shoelace or string Jason had on him and used it to choke Jason to death. When he realizes Tommy warned Jason and that Dre wanted to meet with Jason to become distro, he comes up with the deft plan of framing Dre for the murder.
Speaking of Dre, he gives Detective Rodriguez the location of Tommy’s warehouse via the monitoring device he used to wear. The Feds head over to the warehouse and arrest Tommy’s boys, Spanky and 2Bit. While they’re being hauled off they see Tommy across the lot watching. They incorrectly assume Tommy set them up and will be looking for retribution.
