Andrew Cancio is the type of champion that is impossible not to love. He is humble and works unbelievably hard. He still holds his full-time job with the Gas Company, and trains to defend his WBA junior lightweight championship around his work schedule.
This weekend, Andrew Cancio will make the 2nd defense of his title when he faces Rene Alvarado for a rematch at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California. Cancio previously faced Alvarado in December 2015, winning by 8th round knockout. Alvarado is 8-2 since that loss.
Andrew Cancio has a record of 21-4-2, with 16 knockouts. His last loss was to Joseph Diaz in 2016.
Cancio shocked boxing fans everywhere when he beat then undefeated Puerto Rican fighter Alberto Machado for the WBA super featherweight title by fourth round stoppage. When challenged to a rematch, Cancio took it immediately and again beat Alberto Machado in convincing fashion, with a 3rd round stoppage, confirming that he was the better boxer.
Rene Alvarado, 31-8 with 20 knockouts is the mandatory challenger. Alvarado has won seven fights in a row, putting him in a position to fight for a title. His last loss came via unanimous decision to Yuriorkis Gamboa in 2017.
130 is a very talented weight class, with belts being held by Jamel Herring, Tevin Farmer and Miguel Berchelt. Berchelt rolled over Jason Sosa in early November getting a 4th round stoppage. Herring also fought earlier this month, beating Lamont Roach Jr. by unanimous decision. Tevin Farmer has been quiet lately, since his one-sided unanimous decision win over Guillaume Frenois in July of this year.
Several good unification matchups are out there for Cancio, provided he handles business against Rene Alvarado.
