Thursday evening December 5,2019 two suspects entered a “Regent Jewelers” and attempted to rob the jewelry store. After unsuccessfully robbing the store, according to NBC, they exchanged gunfire with the store owner, injuring one worker inside the store per Coral Gables Police Chief Ed Hudak Jr.
Due to a silent alarm being triggered, police responded on scene within reportedly a minute and a half.
The suspects then high jacked a UPS driver Frank Ordonez, capturing him and his truck and led police on a two county chase during the middle of rush hour traffic.
As seen on video, the UPS truck is riding down the strip and enters amongst the middle of traffic and has no other option but to stop.
This is when authorities rushed to apprehend the suspects ultimately leading in a shootout in broad day light during rush hour.
Helicopters captured these intense moments showing cops open up fire on the UPS truck.
The UPS driver Frank Ordonez was killed during this exchange between authorities and the suspects, but it’s unknown which bullet killed him according to NBC.
The family of the deceased UPS driver stated,
“I knew he was dead. He wasn’t moving.”
“For this to happen, I think, it was just unnecessary,” Merino said. “Other tactics should have been applied, and they weren’t, so when I say the word devastated, it’s an understatement.”
UPS followed suit releasing this statement,
“deeply saddened to learn a UPS service provider was a victim of this senseless act of violence.”
