Jermall Charlo is looking to get his 30th win when he faces Dennis Hogan at the Barclays Center this weekend. This will be Charlo’s second defense of his WBC middleweight title.
Jermall Charlo is 29-0, with 21 knockouts. He has had notable wins versus Julian Williams and Austin Trout at 154 and is looking to prove that he is able to be equally dominant at 160. Since being at 160, Charlo has a beaten Jorge Sebastian Heiland by 4th round knockout, Hugo Centeno Jr. by 2nd round knockout, had a very close unanimous decision win over Matvey Korobov (although the Judge’s scorecards tell a different story) and had a dominant unanimous decision win over Brandon Adams.
Dennis Hogan has a record of 28-2-1. His last fight resulted in a majority decision loss to Jaime Munguia which was a somewhat controversial decision. The scorecards were close, at 114-114, 116-112 and 115-113. That matchup was for Munguia’s WBO Junior Middleweight title. Now, 8 months later, Hogan has another shot at a title, this time at middleweight.
Hogan has made it clear that he felt that he was cheated out of the title in his last fight and doesn’t intend to let that happen again. While Hogan doesn’t have big power and only has 7 knockouts in his 28 wins, he has been able to string together several clear-cut unanimous decisions.
Charlo is the much bigger man here, with a five-inch reach and four-inch height advantage over Dennis Hogan. He is also the more athletically gifted of the two. A dominant performance will further solidify Charlo at 160, but don’t be shocked if Hogan makes him work a lot harder than anticipated.
The fight can be watched on Showtime at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.
