This weekend was the opening of the XFL and the slate of games satisfied fans on social media as they have optimism about the league lasting this time. Ran by WWE’s Vince McMahon back in 2001 as well, the league folded after just one season.
There has been speculation about Colin Kaepernick possibly joining the XFL after continuing to be blackballed by the NFL for peacefully kneeling to protest racism and police brutality in America. He had a workout in from of teams south of Atlanta back in November but sadly, nobody appeared to show any interest.
XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck spoke to NPR over the weekend and discussed why Kaep didn’t get signed by their league. He cited how they weren’t able to pay what he requested salary wise.
“We spoke with his representative,” Luck said. “And the salary requirements that were broached in that conversation were exorbitant and certainly out of our range.
“We have some pretty significant salary restrictions, you know. We’re a start-up league, so we want to make sure that we can be fiscally responsible and fiscally prudent.”
Luck added that the XFL got in contact with Kaep last year about the possibly of signing with them but the negotiations didn’t go far. Players in the XFL reportedly only make $55,000 per season.
Kaepernick was a starter who made it to two straight NFC Title Games and also a Super Bowl. He has every right to earn millions. Right now, he is better than every backup in the NFL and can start on multiple teams. It’s sad that he’s still being treated this way for addressing the disgusting things happening in America. He is still doing very well for himself though as he has a $50 million deal with Nike and also appeared in NYC on Super Bowl Sunday to help feed the homeless and help men buy suits for job interviews.
