Stephanie Hunter, a 27-year-old woman out of Texas is behind bars after attempting to open bank credit cards and a line of credit with a furniture store using Houston Rockets Tilman Fertitta’s identity.
According to Stephanie Hunter, she purchased Tilman Fertitta’s information from the dark web which she then successfully got approval from both the bank and furniture she submitted applications to.
Unfortunately for the woman, Tilman Fertitta uses Lifelock as a means to protect himself against exactly these types of cybercrimes. The identity monitoring service contacted Tilman Fertitta after discrepancies in the applications set off triggers in their system.
While she did use the correct social security number, the email she created “fertitta.t57” as well as the use of her Spring, TX address sent up red flags.
Stephanie Hunter has been charged with fraudulent use of identifying information and using a false statement to obtain credit. The woman paid $10 to purchase Tilman Fertitta’s information, police also believe she had the same aspirations with Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton’s sensitive information.
