The 49ers have remained committed to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who help lead them to Super Bowl. They also reportedly stuck with Garoppolo instead of trying to sign Tom Brady, who’s first choice was reportedly the 49ers.
However, the 49ers also aren’t willing to part with backup quarterback Nick Mullens. According to The Athletic’s Michael Lombardi, the 49ers received “a bunch of phone calls” regarding the possibility of trading for Mullens.
Lombardi went on The GM Shuffle podcast and talked about the multiple teams interested in Mullens.
There were about three teams trying to trade for Kyle Allen. You know what’s interesting about the Kyle Allen trade? This is really interesting. The 49ers got a bunch of phone calls, when I say a bunch, a couple of teams, on Nick Mullens, the backup quarterback in San Francisco. Nick Mullens. They were asking about him, and they turned down every trade offer for Nick Mullens. They wouldn’t trade him.”
There is value in having a reliable backup quarterback Nick Foles showed on the 2017 Super Champion Eagles team, so mullens sticking around might not be a slight of Garoppolo, but instead more of an insurance policy.
