22-year-old junior Jahneil Douglas life was cut short as he was gunned down in front of a Gino’s Pizza in West Toledo. Around 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday night, shots were fired in the parking lot. Douglas was transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his gunshot wound and later died. Police were on the crime scene investigating as the surveillance video is under review to apprehend the suspect. No witnesses have come forward or leads have been determined as the family of Douglas is left with unanswered questions.
It is a tragedy that a young talent such as Douglas didn’t get to fulfill his dream at potentially playing in the NFL or setting a school record in tackles. Without Douglas, the Rockets might dedicate their upcoming season this fall to honor his legacy. This will be a tough loss for the community of Toledo along with those who were close to Douglas. According to Jordan Strack of WTOL, he went to twitter stating “Confirmed with the Toledo Police: the person that shot Jahneil Douglas is still not in custody.”
Friends, family and college programs went to twitter flooding social media with heartfelt tweets commemorating Douglas’ character and hard work.
Douglas was a defensive lineman for the University of Toledo Rockets and had high expectations for a breakout season in the Mid-American Conference. More details will be available as this story develops.
