Sadly the mother didn’t make it but the children was saved.
Fire officials say once the flames were put out, investigators entered the building and found the body of 30-year-old Rachel Long.
Neighbors Leonard Thompson and his fiance, Juanita Williams, were just waking up when their fire alarm went off. The couple lives below the apartment on fire, with their one-year-old child, who they quickly left with before Thompson and another went to the apartment on fire to help.
“There was a guy next to me and he kicked the door down,” said Thompson. “When he kicked the door down that’s when I saw the flames come in and that’s when I heard the screaming. I saw the little girl and I realized when I dragged her out she was severely burned from top to bottom.”
Thompson grabbed the child, rushed down the stairs to Phoenix Police Officers and Phoenix Firefighters waiting down the stairs.
Williams said she saw Long, who was on fire herself, throwing her other child over the balcony.
“She threw the second child over the balcony,” said Williams. “She was burning but she just didn’t make it out. She was a good mother she did everything. go to the pool every week, every weekend, doing stuff with their kids.”
