If white privilege was a person, it would most certainly be Amber Guyger. Guyger was a former Dallas police officer who unjustly murdered Botham Jean in September 2018 at the South Side Flats apartment complex in Dallas.
Guyger was sentenced to 10 years in prison but her privilege and fake tears might set her free.
CNN’s Mallikia Kallingal, Jennifer Henderson and Kay Jones reported how inadequate evidence is believed to be one of the reason Guyger’s defense team wants to overturn this case.
“Her defense team says there was insufficient evidence to convict her of murder. The court should either acquit Guyger of that charge, or acquit her of murder, convict her of criminally negligent homicide, and hold a new hearing on the punishment, according to the court filing,” per CNN.
The lawyers stated in the appeal “although she intentionally and knowingly caused Jean’s death, she had the right to act in deadly force in self-defense since her belief that deadly force was immediately necessary was reasonable under the circumstances.”
It doesn’t make sense to justify a white woman’s murder on the basis of her mistook belief. The fact a black man was eating ice cream in his own apartment and lost his life is horrible. That’s protecting your own within the system. This has nothing to do with a Jean’s death and the justice that hasn’t been truly served. It has everything to do with Guyger’s backing and protection from a system that is unfair towards black people.
If it was a black man who mistook a white woman who was off duty apartment for his own and shot her, he would get life in prison.
According to NBCDFW, Jean’s mother had some words of her own for the team currently helping Guyger to get out at least on probation.
“How can you kill someone in the comfort of their home and just say, ‘I’m sorry,” Allison Jean said. “An apology and you get away with it? I mean where in the world does that happen?”
When it comes to the holy bible and the court system, it seems like mercy is an excuse to be shown only unto white folks who already have the privilege. Unfortunately, mercy is never the action used when it’s a black man on trial. Take it from the black Judge Tammy Kemp who hugged Guyger in the Dallas courtroom who used the bible scriptures as Jesus instructs his followers to do so in action. Would Judge Kemp or even Jean’s brother forgive a black man if he had murdered Guyger?
