Former WBC Super Middleweight Champion David Benavidez won his fight versus Roamer Alexis Angulo in one-sided fashion this weekend. He lost his belt however, on the scale. This left a vacancy for the WBC super-middleweight title.
It did not take long for the WBC Board of Governors to vote 36-1 to order a fight between Canelo Alvarez (53-1) and Avni Yildirim (21-2) for the vacant title.
Canelo Alvarez’s designation as the WBC “Franchise” champion put him at the top of the list to fight for the newly vacant title. Canelo had a scheduled fight date of September 12, but trouble securing an opponent and negotiation issues with DAZN have left this date in jeopardy.
Avni Yildirim will once again benefit from the woes of David Benavidez. It was only a year and a half ago that Avni Yildirim fought Anthony Dirrell for the vacant WBC title after Benavidez was stripped of the title for testing positive for cocaine. Yildirim lost that fight and has not been in the ring since. But he finds himself the beneficiary of Benavidez’s troubles once again.
The WBC has indicated that more details will follow shortly. We will keep you updated as more news develops.
